Uganda Drives Kayoola EVS Electric Bus from Kampala to Cape Town: Africa’s Longest Zero-Emission Journey.

A team from Uganda has set out on an extraordinary journey, driving a locally made electric bus all the way from Kampala to Cape Town, South Africa. The sleek, zero-emission coach rolled out from the Kiira Motors plant in Jinja, flagged off by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ms. Deborah Isoke, who made it clear this wasn’t just a road trip; it was a statement. Uganda wants the continent—and the world—to know it is seriously in the business of building electric vehicles. The star of the expedition is the Kayoola EVS, a full-size luxury electric coach designed and manufactured entirely in Uganda by Kiira Motors Corporation. With its smooth lines and spacious interior, it looks every bit the modern long-distance traveler, but what makes the trip truly daring is that it will run solely on battery power across thousands of kilometers of varied African roads. The route winds through Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, and Botswana before reaching its final stop in Cape Town, where the bus will be showcased at the All-Africa Mega Transport Infrastructure and Connectivity Expo. Every border crossing, every stretch of tarmac and dirt, every climb and descent becomes a live proving ground for the vehicle’s range, durability, and real-world charging needs. The Kayoola EVS is rated for roughly 300 kilometers on a single charge and can refill its batteries in just over an hour and a half with a DC fast charger—impressive numbers that the team is now putting to the ultimate continental test. For the engineers and drivers, the journey is as much about gathering hard data as it is about turning heads. Project manager Allan Muhumuza explained that every kilometer traveled will feed valuable information back to Jinja on energy consumption, thermal management, and overall performance in diverse climates and conditions. For the government officials waving the bus goodbye, though, the mission is simpler: visibility. As Ms. Isoke put it, “We are taking this bus for visibility… We want to show the world that Uganda is also in the space of automotive manufacturing, specifically electric vehicles.”In an Africa increasingly hungry for sustainable transport solutions, a home-grown electric coach rolling into Cape Town under its own power is more than a marketing stunt. It is a rolling declaration that Uganda’s young automotive industry has arrived, ready to compete, collaborate, and help power the continent’s greener future. When the Kayoola EVS finally pulls up in South Africa after crossing half a dozen countries on nothing but electricity, it won’t just be completing a journey; it will be putting Uganda firmly on the map of African innovation.
