Google Tells Court It Cannot Share Search Data With OpenAI and Other Rivals.

Google Tells Court It Cannot Share Search Data With OpenAI and Other Rivals.

Google has asked a US federal appeals court to pause an order that would require the company to share its search data with competitors, including ChatGPT-maker OpenAI. The request comes as Google challenges a ruling that declared it holds an illegal monopoly in online search and search advertising.

The original ruling concluded that Google maintained its dominance through exclusive distribution agreements that made its search engine the default option on many devices and platforms. According to the judge, these practices limited competition and reinforced Google’s control over the market.

In its appeal, Google argues that the court’s decision goes too far, particularly by forcing the company to share sensitive data with rival firms. Google says this requirement could expose trade secrets and cause irreversible harm before the appeals process is completed.

The company maintains that users choose Google because they prefer it, not because they are forced to use it. In its court filings, Google stated that the ruling fails to recognize the competitive reality of today’s tech industry, where innovation moves quickly and new challengers continue to emerge.

Lee-Anne Mulholland, Google’s Vice President of Regulatory Affairs, said the decision overlooks strong competition from both established technology companies and well-funded startups, especially in areas such as artificial intelligence and search-based tools.

While Google is seeking to delay the data-sharing requirement, it clarified that it is not trying to avoid other parts of the court’s order. The company said it is prepared to comply with measures related to user privacy, security protections, and other non-data-sharing remedies.

Google emphasized that it will follow all imposed obligations except those requiring it to hand over proprietary search data or provide syndicated search results and advertisements while its appeal is still under review.
