East Africa AFCON 2027 Readiness: Infrastructure, Hosting Challenges, and Regional Football Development.

An Ivorian journalist recently opened up about some comments he made that stirred up quite a bit of debate across East Africa. He said he didn’t set out to upset anyone in the region, but he still believes that Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania aren’t yet fully ready to host a massive event like the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

He pointed out that hosting standards have climbed sharply after Morocco’s tournament in 2025, where infrastructure, transport and overall organization were top notch. That set a new benchmark across the continent, he said, and it made him worry about whether East Africa could meet those expectations.

Reflecting on what he’s seen, he said that while there are certainly roads and some infrastructure in East Africa, much of the region still feels undeveloped once you leave the main cities, and it lacks the kind of top-class stadiums and fast travel links people now expect.

He also recalled past moments where Kenya lost hosting opportunities because preparations fell short, and used that history to stress why he feels early and thorough planning is so crucial.

His observations sparked spirited reactions from fans and officials, with many insisting that the focus should be on building up the region’s facilities and capabilities rather than critiquing them from afar.
